Open Studio

Portrait of Your Future Self with semillites hernández velasco

For the February instalment of Open Studio, artist semillites hernández velasco leads us in a drawing activity inspired by Alison Yip’s exhibition Soma Topika. In this project, Yip explores ways to envision alternative futures, drawing on the practices of a neo-shaman and psychic to create her paintings.

Watch the video and follow along as semillites shows us how to use the roll of a die to generate fantastical self-portraits of a future self.

Materials

A limited supply of free material kits are available at the gallery–come by to see Alison Yip’s work in person and pick one up! Or, gather the materials below at home to get started:

  • six or more pieces of coloured paper
  • at least one six-sided die
  • six or more index or recipe cards (or plain paper cut into rectangles of about 5” x 7”)
  • an assortment of crayons, markers and/or coloured pencils
  • scissors

If you do not have a six-sided die, you can use a virtual die here.

The word generator semillites refers to in the video can be found here.
