Open Studio is a monthly program for young visitors and families inspired by contemporary art practices and CAG’s current exhibitions. In February, we invite you to join us for an art-making workshop led by artist and CAG’s Acting Curator of Learning and Engagement, Vitória Monteiro.

Inspired by CAG’s upcoming exhibition Kathy Slade: As the sun disappears and the shadows descend from the mountaintop, Vitória will guide participants in an art-making activity that will explore the technique of frottage; the process of transferring surface textures by rubbing over them with various art mediums. Carried out through a creative exploration of textures, the workshop will engage in the various ways we all think about, take part in, and make use of practices of ‘collecting’.

Vitória invites participants to bring textured items to the workshop.

Many spaces have been reserved for neurodivergent participants.

Accessibility

A portion of the workshop will take place outside and requires participants to make their way around city sidewalks and parks. Please contact us at learning@cagvancouver.org if you have any accessibility needs.

A note from the artist: This is a neurodivergent-friendly space! Please feel welcome to bring stim toys and headphones or anything else you use to regulate. I will do my best to make the space cozy and comfortable by minimizing overhead lighting, reducing noise and providing alternative seating options for those of us who like to switch it up and sit on the floor!

ASL interpretation is available on request. Requests can be accommodated up to 5 days in advance. Please contact learning@cagvancouver.org to book or for more information.

RSVP

Registration for this event is free, but limited. RSVP to secure your place here.

Biography

Vitória Monteiro is a Brazilian-Canadian artist who explores the intricacies of language abstraction and the reprocessing of information. Monteiro works in paper-making, sculpture and performance to navigate various sites that knowledge inhabits. Their work embodies themes of dislocation, translation, indexicality, and citation, and is rooted in reflections of being neurodivergent. Their recent and upcoming exhibitions include: To Fold; To Fault, CityScape Community ArtSpace (2023); I have forgotten my umbrella, Mónica Reyes Gallery (2022); Just Out of Reach, The Couch Space as part of Unit/Pitt’s Wrong Wave Festival (2022) and Digital Interventions Part 2: Mediating Vessels, Massy Art Gallery (2022).
