### Biography
Jake Kimble is a multidisciplinary Chipewyan (Dënesųłıné) artist from Treaty 8 territory in the Northwest Territories, whose practice revolves around acts of self-care, self-repair and gender-based ideological refusal. Utilizing the camera to reclaim agency, Kimble asserts the importance of being able to tell one’s stories through and through. Kimble belongs to the Deninu Kųę́ First Nation and currently works on the stolen territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Most recently he attained a BFA in Photography from Emily Carr University of Art + Design while also holding a Degree in Acting from Vancouver Film School. Using the funny bone as a tool, Kimble excavates themes of existentialism, narcissism and the strange, offering an invitation to the audience to examine the absurdities that exist within the everyday so that they too may exhale, unclench and even chuckle in the spaces where laughter is often lost.

### Biographies
Rochelle Goldberg lives and works in Berlin. Her solo exhibitions include Mercer Union, Toronto; Commercial Street, Los Angeles; Kunsthalle Lingen, Germany; The Power Station, Dallas; GAMeC di Bergamo, Italy; and SculptureCenter, New York. Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions at institutions such as Gallerie delle Prigioni, Treviso, Italy; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; Oakville Galleries, Canada; Montpellier Contemporain; Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard, Paris; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Dortmunder Kunstverein, Germany; and Swiss Institute, New York, amongst others. She was Artist in Residence at The Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas (2018), and was selected to present for the inaugural Frieze Sculpture at Rockefeller Center, New York (2019). She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard College, New York.

Liz Magor lives and works in Vancouver. Her recent solo exhibitions include MOCA Toronto; Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin; Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea, UK; Carpenter Center for the Arts, Cambridge; Renaissance Society, Chicago; Kunstverein in Hamburg; and Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich. Her work has been included in group exhibitions including Musée d’art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Kunsthalle Basel; Wattis Institute, San Francisco; Vancouver Art Gallery; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; National Gallery of Canada; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Biennale of Sydney. In 1987, she exhibited at documenta 8, and in 1984, she represented Canada at the Venice Biennale. She was named Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France in 2021, and is the recipient of the Gershon Iskowitz Prize (2014), the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts (2009), and a Governor General’s Award in Visual & Media Arts (2001).

### Biography
Ryan Tacata is a performance maker, scholar, and Assistant Professor of Theatre & Performance at the School for the Contemporary Arts, Simon Fraser University. Tacata is a co-founder of the San Francisco based performance group For You, with Erika Chong Shuch and Rowena Richie. Other works include *Curtain Speech* (2023), *minor repair*. (2019), *Lolas* (2017); and a site-specific dance alongside sheep and herding dogs in *Doggie Hamlet* (2015–) by Ann Carlson. His performance work has been presented at the Asian Art Museum, Stanford University, Headlands Center for the Arts, the City of Chicago, Court Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Museum of Performance + Design, The Momentary, and Libby Leshgold Gallery, amongst others. Tacata’s writing has appeared in Performa, TDR, Performance Research, SFMOMA's Open Space; and more recently in the exhibition catalogue, *Bonnie Orra Sherk: Life Frames Since 1970* (Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, 2024).

### Biography
Rebecca Brewer makes use of painterly abstraction to explore the overlooked and under-considered in the human and natural worlds. Working primarily in oil on wood, the artist has also produced large-scale felted tapestries and pigmented resin compositions. Using the specificities of material and the mechanisms of our perception, the artist creates an expressionistic, dynamic tension between representation and abstraction that tests our assumptions of the work’s process and its subjects. Brewer's solo exhibitions include Catriona Jeffries, Vancouver; Frye Art Museum, Seattle; Oakville Galleries, Canada (with Rochelle Goldberg); and Exercise, Vancouver, with group exhibitions including the Nanaimo Art Gallery; Vancouver Art Gallery; Marcelle Alix, Paris; and Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff. Brewer was the winner of the 2011 RBC Canadian Painting Competition.

Contemporary Art Practices is designed for artists ages 15–19 who are interested in advancing their artistic skills and expanding their creative thinking.

Developed in collaboration with Arts Umbrella, the intensive is a stimulating experience for young artists committed to experimentation and dedicated to pushing the boundaries of their own art practice. In a supportive studio environment, students work with professional Vancouver artists, curators, and educators to explore a range of contemporary art practices.

The program introduces participants to creative approaches in art-making through a series of workshops and self-directed projects at Arts Umbrella. Students engage in critiques and discussions about how to develop their ideas and work with new materials and methods. 

This program — offered on a full scholarship — culminates with an exhibition of student work in the Cassils | Henriquez Exhibition Gallery at Arts Umbrella.

### Biographies
Diane Severin Nguyen works with photography, video and installation. Through material and sculptural experimentations, Nguyen approaches the photographic moment as one of transformation. The artist is particularly interested in exceeding photography as a mode of documentation, and engages with it rather as a set of conditions shaped by desire and speculation. Her video work narrativizes these tensions by examining the histories of power, victimhood and forms of propaganda that underpin cultural (and self) image-making. She has exhibited her work internationally, in places like SculptureCenter, The Renaissance Society, Rockbund Art Museum, MoMA PS1, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Schinkel Pavilion, Jeu du Paume, the Hammer Museum, and many others. Her films have been screened at film festivals such as the New York Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam and Berlinale. Nguyen is a recent recipient of the 2023 Guggenheim fellowship and lives and works in New York.

X Zhu-Nowell is a curator, writer and institutional leader with an international presence, operating primarily between Shanghai and New York. They are the Artistic Director at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai. Their innovative curatorial approach is exemplified in the museum’s 2023 program, which was centered around solo exhibitions and new commissions from six artists from Asia and its diaspora: WangShui, Evelyn Taocheng Wang, Tosh Basco, Diane Severin Nguyen, Shubigi Rao, and Tan Jing. From 2014 to 2022, X Zhu-Nowell was a curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, where their exhibition *Wu Tsang: Anthem* was celebrated as the best exhibition of 2021 by the *New York Times*. In 2022, they co-organized the 6th Asian Art Council meeting in Kingston, Jamaica, collaborating with artist Kandis Williams to explore themes of dispossession and hybridity within curatorial practices and the white cube.

### Biography
Mila Zuo is an associate professor in the Department of Theatre and Film at UBC, and Graduate Advisor for the Cinema and Media Studies graduate program. She is the author of *Vulgar Beauty: Acting Chinese in the Global Sensorium* (Duke University Press, 2022) and conducts research on transnational Asian cinemas; film-philosophy; abject and enchanted epistemologies; star studies; digital and new media; and critical theories of gender, sexuality, and race and ethnicity. In addition to her scholarly work, Zuo writes, directs, and produces narrative films, visual essays, documentaries, and music videos.

In partnership with Catriona Jeffries, CAG is pleased to host a launch for Tanya Lukin Linklater’s publication *My mind is with the weather*. Lukin Linklater will be joined in conversation by poet and editor Michael Nardone. 

Published on the occasion of her recent three-part exhibition of the same name, My mind is with the weather documents a series of significant recent works produced by Lukin Linklater and her collaborators, highlighting her long-term research into relational gestures such as conversation, movement, listening, and touch.

Featuring contributions from Eungie Joo, Layli Long Soldier, Tanya Lukin Linklater, and Beth Piatote, the publication is edited by Frances Loeffler and co-published by the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; Oakville Galleries; and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin.

### Biographies
Tanya Lukin Linklater (Alutiiq/Sugpiaq, b. 1976, Kodiak Island, USA) undertakes embodied inquiry in rehearsal, performance, video, installation, and writing. Her recent exhibitions include Aichi Triennale, Japan; Gwangju Biennale, South Korea; New Museum Triennial, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Toronto Biennial of Art. *Inner blades of grass (soft)*, *inner blades of grass (cured)*, *inner blades of grass (bruised by weather)*, including works from the last ten years and new commissions, and curated by Kelly Kivland, will be presented by the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2024. Tanya lives and works in Nbisiing Anishnaabeg aki.
 
Michael Nardone is a poet and editor based in Montréal. Recent works include *Aural Poetics*, *In Vivid Density*, and, with Dana Michel, *Yellow Towel: A Score*. In 2025, Talonbooks will publish his book of dialogues on poetics, *Convivialities*.

### Biography
Kyra Kordoski has been working with Maureen Gruben as a studio manager, writer and photographer since 2016 and spends part of her year at Maureen’s home in Tuktoyaktuk. Her art writing and/or arts documentation have been featured in various publications, including *Refract: An Open Access Visual Studies Journal*, *esse arts + opinions*, *C Magazine*, *Musicworks*, *White Fungus*, *Canadian Art*, *BOMB*, *Inuit Art Quarterly*, CBC, and *The Globe and Mail*. She holds an MA from the University of Leeds and an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London.

### Biography
Casey Wei’s interdisciplinary practice in filmmaking, writing and performance is informed by participatory activities such as editing, publishing and programming. She is the co-founder and Editor of *ReIssue* magazine, and the Short Forum Programmer at Vancouver International Film Festival. Recent works include the book *Tuning to Oblivion: an artist residency* (M:ST Performative Art, 2023), and the album *Stimuloso* (Mint Records, 2022) with her band, Kamikaze Nurse. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University.

### Biography
Maureen Gruben’s diverse multi-media practice incorporates organic and industrial materials that are frequently found or salvaged. She was born and raised in Tuktoyaktuk, where her parents were traditional Inuvialuk knowledge keepers and founders of E. Gruben’s Transport. Gruben holds a BFA from the University of Victoria and a Certificate in Indigenous Political Development & Leadership, En’owkin Centre, Penticton. Recent exhibitions include presentations at Museu de Arte de São Paulo; Cooper Cole Gallery, Toronto; National Nordic Museum, Seattle; and Women’s Gallery & Darkroom, New York. She was shortlisted for the 2023 Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award and longlisted for the 2019 Aesthetica Art Prize and the 2021 Sobey Art Award. Her work is held in public and private collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Indigenous Art Centre, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada.
